What’s the best time to apply for a job?
Job searching can feel like a full-time job and it’s even harder to find the time to finish applications when you’re already working somewhere else. If you’re spending your evenings trying to get emails sent and resumes submitted, research is showing that’s probably not the best use of your time.
Over 1,600 applications across a variety of job industries were studied by TalentWorks to determine the best and the worst times to apply for jobs. What they found? The later in the day your resume is submitted, the less likely it is to lead to an interview. So how do you get to that next step of the hiring process? Check out these tips for the best times to apply.
Anything submitted after 7:30pm was the least likely to get an interview. Applications submitted after 4:00pm still had only a 5% chance of getting the job. If you’re looking for a new job, working on your resume after your day has ended might be the easiest to fit into your schedule, but it probably won’t work out very well for landing that new gig.
The study found that the best time to apply for a job was between 6:00am and 10:00am. These applicants were five times more likely to land an interview. Applying to a job in a different part of the country? Make sure you’re using the potential employer’s time zone when sending in your resume rather than your own. You can also boost your odds of advancing to the interview process and getting hired by applying within three or four days of the job posting. When you see something you want to consider—go after it! By doing this AND applying in the morning hours, you can increase your chances of getting hired by nearly 40 times.
If you’re currently working, but searching for a new job, try using your lunch breaks to work on your resume or application and wake up earlier in the morning to get things submitted. Research shows the odds will be more in your favor by being the early bird!
